The Velven difference

What exactly is Velven?

Velven is a self adhesive architectural finish for interior surfaces. You can apply it to walls, ceilings, cabinet and drawer fronts, internal doors, wardrobes, shelves, furniture and vanity panels to change their look without replacing them.

Why did we start Velven?

We started Velven while living in an apartment and feeling frustrated by how few realistic ways there were to make it feel like our own. We had ideas, but not the budget, space or time for a renovation, and most affordable options felt cheap or generic. We wanted a better option for changing the surfaces already there without demolition or weeks of disruption. That search became Velven.

How is Velven different from standard contact paper?

Velven is a commercial grade architectural finish of the kind used in hotels, boutiques and other commercial spaces. It is thicker and more durable than standard contact paper, with the look and feel of a finished material rather than a printed covering. You can position and adjust the pressure sensitive adhesive before pressing it down firmly. Micro air channels help trapped air move toward the edges as you smooth the film.

What does the finish feel like?

Woodgrain and stone finishes use embossing matched to the image, giving the surface grain, texture and depth. A sample lets you feel it and see it in your own space.

Adhesive and application

How does the adhesive work?

Light pressure gives you enough grip to position and align the film. Once it is in place, firm and even pressure strengthens the bond. The bond continues to develop after installation and reaches its maximum strength in approximately 24 to 48 hours.

Can I reposition it during application?

Yes. The adhesive does not reach its full bond immediately, so you can work in manageable sections, check the alignment and grain direction, and make small adjustments before pressing the film down firmly. Micro air channels give trapped air a path toward the edges as you smooth.

What tools do I need?

Use a felt edge squeegee or applicator, a sharp blade, a soft cloth, isopropyl or suitable degreaser, and a hair dryer or low heat gun for edges and corners.

How do I handle edges and curves?

Warm the film with a hair dryer or a low heat gun as you reach an edge or a tight turn. The heat relaxes it so it curves and hugs the surface, then press it down firmly as it cools.

Performance and surfaces

Is it water resistant?

The surface of Velven is waterproof and handles splashes and everyday moisture. Pay close attention to the edges and joins. Water left against an exposed edge can gradually work beneath the film and weaken the adhesive bond.

How long does it last?

Five to ten years, depending on where you use it and how often it is touched. A wardrobe door, feature panel or the quiet side of a cabinet tends toward the longer end. Daily use on drawer fronts and doors puts them nearer the shorter end. Clean preparation and firmly pressed edges help the film last.

Velven is made for interior walls, ceilings, cabinet and drawer fronts, internal doors, wardrobes, shelves, furniture and vanity panels. You can carry one finish across several surfaces or use different finishes in different parts of a room.

Buying samples

Should I order samples first?

Yes, especially if you are deciding between finishes. A sample lets you see the colour in your own light and feel the texture and coating before choosing. If you already know the finish you want, you can go straight to a roll and order the width and length that suit your project.

Yes. Your sample spend gives you up to $30 off a later order of $50 or more.

How much is shipping?

A4 samples and Sample Boxes always ship free. For tools and rolls:

• Spend $149 or more and standard shipping is free.
• Spend under $149 and shipping is $4.95 for tools or $14.95 for rolls.
• Your full cart subtotal counts toward free shipping, even when items are split between delivery groups.
• Express is available at checkout.
• Because of their parcel length, 120cm rolls cannot be delivered to ACT, TAS or NT. All smaller widths, samples and tools can still be delivered there.
