The Velven difference
What exactly is Velven?
Velven is a premium self adhesive architectural finish for interior surfaces. It is made for cabinet fronts, drawer faces, internal doors, wardrobes, shelves, furniture and vanity panels.
Why did we start Velven?
Spend time in a fine hotel, a boutique or a designer space and the atmosphere often comes down to the surfaces. Much of that considered, high end look is achieved with architectural vinyl rather than solid stone or timber. It taught us something simple. A quality material, chosen with good taste and applied with care, can create the same rich feeling at a fraction of the cost and effort. We started Velven to bring that within reach at home, curating our own range of architectural finishes for walls, doors, cabinets and furniture.
How is Velven different from standard contact paper?
Velven is a thicker architectural finish with detailed print, tactile texture, a protective surface coating and repositionable adhesive. Those layers help it sit flatter, feel more substantial and give you more control during application.
What does the finish feel like?
Woodgrain and stone finishes use tactile embossing matched to the image, so the surface has grain, texture and depth. The best way to experience the difference is to feel a sample in your own space.
Adhesive and application
How does the adhesive work?
Velven uses pressure sensitive adhesive. With light pressure, you can position the film and refine alignment. Once it is right, firm pressure activates a stronger bond. Micro air channels in the adhesive layer help trapped air move out toward the edges as you smooth the film down.
Does that make application more controlled?
Yes. A little preparation goes a long way. Start with a clean surface, check your grain direction, then work gradually and smooth each section as you go.
What tools do I need?
Use a felt edge squeegee or applicator, a sharp blade, a soft cloth, isopropyl or suitable degreaser, and a hair dryer or low heat gun for edges and corners.
How do I handle edges and curves?
Warm the film with a hair dryer or a low heat gun as you reach an edge or a tight turn. The heat relaxes it so it curves and hugs the surface, then press it down firmly as it cools.
Performance and surfaces
Is it water resistant?
The finished surface is water resistant and easy to wipe clean, but Velven is not designed for continuously wet areas such as showers, basin surrounds or places where water sits against an edge.
How long does it last?
Five to ten years, depending on where it lives and how often it gets touched. A wardrobe door, a feature panel or the quiet side of a cabinet sits at the longer end, looking good for the better part of a decade. The hardest working surfaces, the drawer fronts you open daily and the doors everyone pushes, sit nearer the shorter end. Clean prep and well pressed edges are what carry it across the years.
Where should I use it?
Use it on smooth, sealed and stable surfaces: laminate or melamine cabinet fronts, drawer fronts, furniture, internal doors, wardrobe panels, shelves, sealed metal, glass and smooth sealed vanity fronts.
Buying samples
Should I order samples first?
If you are comparing finishes, yes. A sample lets you feel the texture and coating, and see the colour in your own light. If you already know the finish, measure carefully and order the roll size that suits the surface.
Can my samples count toward a full order?
Yes. When you buy a sample, your sample spend comes back as up to $30 off a later order of $50 or more.
Shipping
How much is shipping?
A4 samples and Sample Boxes ship free. Tools and all roll widths, including 120cm*, have free shipping on orders over $149. The whole cart subtotal counts, even if mixed widths are split into separate delivery groups. On orders under $149, tools ship for $4.95 and rolls ship for $14.95. Express is available at checkout. *120cm rolls cannot be shipped to ACT, TAS or NT. All smaller widths, samples and tools can still be shipped to these locations.
